Strief played for several teams during his career from 1879 to 1885.
From 1884–1885 Gleason played for the St. Louis Maroons during their only season in the Union Association and their first in the National League.
He finished his career in 1885 when he split the season between the Athletics and the Providence Grays.
The history of professional baseball in Birmingham began with the establishment of the Barons as one of the charter members of the original Southern League in 1885.
The team returned to the minors the next year and disbanded after the 1885 season.
