Drafted by the New York Mets in the 9th round of the 1982 MLB amateur draft, Redfield would make his Major League Baseball debut with the California Angels on June 4, 1988, and appear in his final game on July 15, 1991.
On June 2, 1991, he was promoted again to manager of the Expos, who were lodged in last place in the National League East Division after 49 games.
He was originally selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 19th round of the 1989 June draft before being acquired by Pittsburgh in a deal for infielder Tommy Shields in September 1991.
