4 unusual facts about 2001 in sports


Bryant Reeves

Eventually, after the Grizzlies moved to Memphis, Tennessee, in 2001, Reeves started the season on the injured list due to chronic back pain and was never able to play another game (the only games he played with the team in Memphis were two preseason games).

Byrd Stadium

In November 2001, as the football team once again became an ACC-title contender, temporary bleachers were brought in for an additional 3,000 seats.

Jeff Shoate

Shoate played at the University of Montana in 1999 and San Diego State University from 2001-2003, recording 157 career tackles, seven interceptions, 28 pass breakups and five forced fumbles.

Sun Bowl stadium

The current press box was added in 1969, and the stadium reached the capacity of 52,000 in 1982 with the addition of the north endzone stands and the expansion of the east stands (The south endzone is still vacant, with the ground of the bowl covered with the school's logos.) The school retook control of the land and stadium in 2001.


Best Female Soccer Player ESPY Award

The award, as the Best Male Soccer Player ESPY Award, evolved from the Best Soccer Player ESPY Award, which was awarded in 2000 and 2001, and the latter once more absorbed the gender-specific awards in 2005.

Best NHL Player ESPY Award

Of the nineteen awards conferred, just five have gone to players not from Canada (two to Hasek and one to countrymate right wing Jaromír Jágr, one to American Tim Thomas, and one to American Jonathan Quick), and just one has gone to a defenseman (that of 2001, to Canadian Chris Pronger).

Legion Field

In 2001, it was the home field for the single season of the Birmingham Thunderbolts of the XFL.
