It will be the second time for Vietnam to host an Asia level multi-sports event, after Hanoi held Asian Indoor Games (2009) and Southeast Asian Games (2003).
The sport continues to receive greater recognition, and was included as a sport in the 2003 Southeast Asian Games and in the Chinese National Peasants' Games.

She first came to prominence in the 2003 Southeast Asian Games badminton women's singles, when she won the gold medal, along the way beating Singapore's Li Li, then the reigning Commonwealth Games Champion.
