In 1959 he served as the information officer for Major General Edwin Walker who was the commander of the 24th Infantry Division in Germany.
He served in the United States Army in the 1991 Persian Gulf War as a tank crewman in the 24th Infantry Division and was decorated for valor for helping rescue fellow tank crewmen from a burning tank during the Battle of Rumaila.
LST-953 carried elements of the 2nd Marine Division to Nagasaki on 24 September for the occupation of Japan and men of the US Army's 24th Infantry Division to Matsuyama on 27 October.
