He served consecutive terms in the 30th, 31st, 32nd, 33rd and 34th Canadian Parliaments until his defeat in the 1993 federal election at the hands of the Liberal Party's Paul Zed.
Born in Teeswater in 1924 and attending primary and secondary school in the community, Dr. Gilles went on to become the founding Dean of the Schulich School of Business and an M.P. during the 30th Canadian Parliament.
