Hanging over the chancel arch there are the royal arms of Queen Anne (1702–1714) and were adopted by the crown after the union of England and Scotland in 1707.
At that time Scotland was known informally as "North Britain", and O'Connell was hoping that the benefits to Scotland under the Acts of Union 1707 would also be seen in Ireland which had been united to the rest of the United Kingdom under the Acts of Union 1800.

The pound Scots (Modern Scots: Pund Scots, Middle Scots: Pund Scottis) was the unit of currency in the Kingdom of Scotland before the kingdom unified with the Kingdom of England in 1707.
Andrew Fletcher (1653–1716) the grandson of the first at Saltoun was known, during his life and in death, as 'The Patriot', for his unflinching opposition to the Acts of Union 1707.
