Although the facility is geographically located within Ejin Banner of Inner Mongolia's Alxa League, it is named after the nearest city, Jiuquan in Gansu Province.

Minqin County

Geographically, Minqin county occupies one of Gansu's panhandles, bordering in the north, east, and southeast on the Alashan League of Inner Mongolia.

Spermophilus pallidicauda

The closely related species, Spermophilus alashanicus from the Alashan Desert and Spermophilus brevicauda, found in eastern Kazakhstan and in Tian Shan mountain range, are allopatric in distribution as they are largely separated by geographic boundaries.
