In 1864 a Portland stone memorial was erected, dedicated to the members of the Army Medical Department who died in the Crimean War.
He served as the Commander, U.S. Army Medical Department Center and School and Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas from August 2004 until July 2006.
In 1857 he was appointed secretary to Sidney Herbert's committee on the sanitary state of the army, and in 1859 he became deputy inspector-general in charge of the new statistical branch of the army medical department, a post which he held for fourteen years.
