Titled No Trams to Lime Street (1959), the Liverpool-set piece was presented in ABC Television's Armchair Theatre anthology strand, for which Owen continued to write plays into the 1960s.
But in 1967 the Independent Television Authority ordered Rediffusion London to enter into a joint arrangement with Associated British Corporation, the holder of the weekend Midlands and North of England franchises, to form Thames Television.
He did similar work in England for the BBC and Associated British Corporation (London) and Granada TV (where he created the ground-breaking documentary Seven Up!) before embarking on a career as a feature-length film-making.
One of his last acts before his death was to condemn the Independent Television Authority for forcing Rediffusion into (minority) partnership with ABC Weekend TV to create the new Thames Television.

Following a success with Candid Mike, Routh started a British version of the U.S. show Candid Camera around 1961 for the U.K. broadcaster ABC TV.
"Little Lost Robot" was adapted by Leo Lehman for the 1962 Associated British Corporation anthology television series Out of This World, which also marks the first appearance of Susan Calvin, played by Maxine Audley, in TV and movies.
