In December 2009 he assumed duties as Commandant, Australian Defence Force Academy.
Burgmann has previously housed residents attending the University of Canberra, Canberra Institute of Technology, and the Australian Defence Force Academy.
He was awarded a Literary Fellowship at the Australian Defence Force Academy in 1990, which enabled the publication of the expanded script of More Than A Sentimental Bloke.
His papers, writing and correspondence are held in the Australian Defence Force Academy Library in Canberra.

In 2010, as part of Operation Wandering Souls, Bob Hall and Derrill de Heer, both Vietnam veterans who are now academics at the University of New South Wales and the Australian Defence Force Academy, presented to the Veterans Association of Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, a list containing the full names, ranks and unit numbers of 535 Vietnamese soldiers buried by Australians in the province.
The Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) was opened in 1983, in Canberra, and most military officers since then have received their tertiary education and basic military training in its tri-service environment.
The team continue to work as part of the Australian Hypersonics Initiative, a joint program of The University of Queensland, the Australian National University and the University of New South Wales' Australian Defence Force Academy campus, the governments of Queensland and South Australia and the Australian Defence Department.
