Evidence was published in a 2013 molecular study which showed that it was the sister taxon to the Australian Magpie (C. tibicen).
Darley Football Club was formed in 1919 when it was known as the Magpies, playing in the Melton and Bacchus Marsh District Football League where the club was successful winning nine premierships between 1934 and 1957.
The team colours are Black, White and Silver and the club is named after the ubiquitous Australian Magpie.
Stormwater retention ponds constructed in the eastern section of the site have been transformed into wetland habitats, partially recreating the original character of the eastern part of the site, and this has attracted a wide variety of bird and animal life including Dusky Moorhens, Australian Magpies and Pelicans.
