He is a bonsai enthusiast; and he initiated the exhibition of Australian native plants as bonsai that are displayed at the Australian National Botanic Gardens annually.
In 1992 the 1 September was formally declared as "National Wattle Day" by then Minister for the Environment, Ros Kelly at a ceremony held at the Australian National Botanic Gardens.
