2 unusual facts about Barajas airport


Madrid–Barajas Airport

In 1997, it opened the North Dock, which is used as an exclusive terminal for Iberia's Schengen flights.

On 20 August 2008, Spanair Flight 5022 which was travelling to Gran Canaria, veered off to the right and into the ground while climbing immediately after lifting off from runway 36L at 14:45 local time.


July 1979 Madrid bombings

The attacks, consisting of coordinated bombings in Barajas Airport and the train stations of Atocha and Chamartín, killed 7 people and injured a further 100.

Pegaso Z-403

In the final scene of Orson Welles's 1955 film Mr. Arkadin, a pair of Pegaso Z-403 coaches appear prominently close to an aircraft in an aeroport (actually, Madrid Barajas airport, the coaches belonging to Iberia airlines).
