In 1966, Crothers returned to Broadway in a starring role opposite Joan Van Ark in Barefoot in the Park, which he worked on simultaneously with his stint on Dark Shadows.

Neil Simon's Barefoot in the Park had its premiere at the theater in 1963, starring Robert Redford and Elizabeth Ashley.
He appeared as an actor in numerous stage productions, including the west-coast tour of Barefoot in the Park, directed by Jerry Paris, the original West coast production of Shay by Anne Commire, and A. R. Gurney's Love Letters with Stephanie Zimbalist.
In addition to his work on Seventh Avenue, Mr. Brooks also designed the costumes for numerous Broadway plays, including Promises, Promises, No Strings, and Barefoot in the Park; television shows including The Letter, The Two Mrs. Grenvilles; and feature length motion pictures such as Star!, Darling Lili and The Cardinal, being nominated for the Academy Award for Costume Design for all three films.
