She started swimming aged four, and was noticed aged eight by British Swimming's national performance director Bill Sweetenham at a training camp in South Africa.
As a result, he was invited to his first national training camp under Bill Sweetenham for prospective Olympic swimmers.
She returned to Brisbane at the end of 1977 and she came under the guidance of coach Bill Sweetenham at the Commercial Swimming Club.
