Bharat Ratna Bismillah Khan's family had played shehnai for generations in Naubatkhana, which overlooked palaces and temples, and enabled their music to be heard across the countryside.

He was one of four artists including Bismillah Khan, Ali Akbar Khan, and Ravi Shankar who participated in the hugely popular Hollywood Bowl music festival in Los Angeles in the summer of 1967.In 1974, KVN went to teach in Berkeley, California for a year, in the company of dancer Balasaraswati and sitarist Nikhil Banerjee.
Some of the famous performers of the past include Bismillah Khan, Kishori Amonkar, M. Balamuralikrishna, D. K. Pattammal, and Gangubai Hangal.
Among them were son of Shahzada Kamran Durrani, Shahzada Sardar Bismillah Khan Durrani, migrated with his son Sardar Rasheed Khan Durrani and grandson Sardar Nidda Durrani and family with personal guards to a small fort of an elder of the Kakar tribe in Kuchlak near British Quetta.
She has also received Sangeet Natak Akademi’s ‘Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar’ for her contribution to theatre.
