He started working in comics in 1943 at Fiction House, where his work included features like Captain Wings in Wing Comics, on which he succeeded Bob Lubbers, as well as the Western hero Firehair.
Entering the comic book field as artist, letterer and writer, he became friends with cartoonist Bob Lubbers, who later suggested he draw newspaper comics.
