Born in Bolton, Lancashire, Ainscow began his career with Blackpool as an apprentice, making his debut when then-Seasiders manager, Bob Stokoe, picked him to play in the 1971 Anglo-Italian Cup.
In 1978–79, under new manager Bob Stokoe, Suddaby appeared in 42 of Blackpool's 46 league games, scoring twice.

New manager Bob Stokoe, who succeeded Les Shannon around Christmastime, allowed Pickering to return to Blackburn Rovers; however, after a disagreement with Rovers manager Ken Furphy, he left for Brighton, where he finished his career.
