From the 1970s until May 2002, the station was also known for its country music heritage, as well as being nationally famous for western swing music, harboring such musicians as Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys, Johnnie Lee Wills and disc jockey Billy Parker, who has won awards as country music disc jockey of the year.
His earliest influences were popular blues artists of the day such as Bessie Smith, Blind Lemon Jefferson and Leroy Carr, together with country musicians including Jimmie Rodgers and Bob Wills.
He also was in a few Hollywood films with Bob Wills most notably Take Me Back to Oklahoma with Tex Ritter etc. and Go West, Young Lady featuring Penny Singleton and the up and coming Glenn Ford.
The beer is mentioned frequently in the title track of Red Steagall's 1976 album "Lone Star Beer and Bob Wills Music".
