William Byrd II died on August 26, 1744 and was buried at Westover Plantation, Virginia, British America.
He was dissatisfied with the official borders, and in 1827 declared the village to be capital of the "Republic of Madawaska", a self-proclaimed unrecognized sovereign state being part neither of the United States nor of British America (Canada) although comprising portions of both.
It was settled by Charles Clinton (et al.) in 1731, who in 1729 resolved to emigrate to British America and having persuaded a number of his friends and relatives to join him, he chartered a ship, for the purpose of conveying his colony to Philadelphia.
He took the Oath of Allegiance to King George II at Philadelphia upon arrival on 21 September 1731, as was required of all male immigrants to British America.
