Latterly part of the Merry-go-round train system, the trains were most often hauled by a pair of British Rail Class 20 diesel locomotives, en route to Fiddlers Ferry Power Station.
These units, numbered 50 and 51, had EE 8SVT engines (the only such engines in Australian built locomotives), and were built to the British Rail Class 20 specifications excepting rail gauge and some body detail.
A train conveying flasks would be hauled by two locomotives, either Class 20 or Class 37, but Class 66 locomotives are increasingly being used.
