He is the first and still the only Iranian to win the gold medal in the Superheavy Weight of Freestyle Wrestling, which he won at the World Championship 1989 against Bruce Baumgartner.
Athletically, it is best known as the alma mater of basketball legend Larry Bird; World Champion gymnast Kurt Thomas; and Olympic, World and Pan-American Champion free-style wrestler, Bruce Baumgartner.
