It is one of the oldest camps still in operation in North Texas and the only Camp Fire camp in Texas.
Camp Walden was founded in 1916, shortly after the first Girl Scout camp and Camp Fire Girls camps began, at the very end of the Progressive Era in the United States.
Their son Luther Halsey Gulick Jr. (1865–1918) was a physician who founded Camp Fire Girls and supervised the invention of basketball.
