Learning of Boner's removal from office, Stedman invited Boner to New York City, and soon secured congenial employment for Boner on the staff on the Century Dictionary, then in course of preparation.
After teaching English at Cornell College in Iowa (1913-1917), he worked as an editor for the Century Company in New York City where he was definitions editor of The New Century Dictionary in two volumes.

He was managing editor of the first edition of the Century Dictionary, and editor-in-chief of the revised edition after the death of editor William Dwight Whitney in 1894.
Their first dictionary was Clarence Barnhart's American College Dictionary, published in 1947, and based primarily on The New Century Dictionary, an abridgement of the Century.
