It was the first event for the new Champ Car World Series which was created when Gerald Forsythe, Kevin Kalkhoven, Paul Gentilozzi and Dan Petit purchased the bankrupt CART series' liquidated assets in an Indianapolis courtroom the previous January.
It was also announced that actor - and supporter of the Victory Junction Gang Camp - Paul Newman would return to NASCAR after a prolonged absence last running the #37 Kmart sponsored Ford in the mid-1990s by purchasing the Robert Yates Racing franchise and running the teams under the newly established Yates/Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing banner, which has been successful in the open-wheel Champ Car World Series.
With a series of impressive tests he was signed to drive in the Champ Car World Series for CTE Racing-HVM, owned jointly by Cedric the Entertainer and Keith Wiggins, in 2006 as a teammate to the even younger Nelson Philippe.

Lanigan expanded his sponsorship into team ownership in 2001, joining forces with Eric Bachelart to co-own Conquest Racing which competed in the IndyCar Series in 2001 and 2002, then the Champ Car World Series from 2003 to 2006.
On course the 2007 event featured races run by the Historic Stock Car Racing Series, Formula D drift competitions, Formula BMW, Atlantic Championship and the marquee running of the Champ Car World Series.
