Sir William Douglas, 4th Baronet

Lockerbie House was built for Sir William Douglas, his wife Dame Grace Johnstone and their children, of whom the eldest, Charles, succeeded as 6th Marquess of Queensberry.

Archibald Douglas, 1st Baron Douglas

He was succeeded by his sons Archibald (1773–1844) as 2nd Baron Douglas of Douglas, Charles (1775–1848) as 3rd Baron and Rev. James (1787–1857) as 4th Baron, on whose death, the Barony of Douglas of Douglas became extinct.

Douglas House, Petersham

After his death in 1725, Carlton's nephew, Charles Douglas, 3rd Duke of Queensberry inherited the house and, with his wife, Catherine "Kitty" Hyde, the couple played host to literary and artistic figures of the time including John Gay who is reputed to have written and rehearsed the Beggar's Opera in 1728 whilst at the riverside summerhouse in the grounds.
