Charles Somerset, 4th Duke of Beaufort (1709 – 1756), younger son of Henry Somerset, 2nd Duke of Beaufort
The work was largely undertaken by architect Charles Howells and builder William Knowles of Chepstow, who had also undertaken work at nearby Tintern for the Duke of Beaufort.

He was appointed Custos Rotulorum of Radnorshire (1682–1689), Deputy Lieutenant of Monmouthshire (1683–1687), Wiltshire (1683–1688) and Gloucestershire (1685–1687).
