Starting in 2005, McPheeters has written for a variety of national magazines, including the Chicago Reader, Huffington Post, the OC Weekly, and the Village Voice.
In July 2007 both the Washington City Paper and the Chicago Reader were sold to the Tampa-based Creative Loafing chain.
In May 2012, the Chicago Reader was sold to Wrapports, publisher of the competing Chicago Sun-Times, in a deal reported at $3 million.
