In 2012, Kurd was considered as a nominee for the post of Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz but was ruled out of contention due to constitutional ineligibility.
His father, the late Mr Justice Sajjad Ahmed Jan, served as a Judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, and later as the Chief Election Commissioner.

He was appointed as Chief Election Commissioner on 17 March 2009 and still he is the Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan.
