Humphreys Peak was named in about 1870 for General Andrew A. Humphreys, a U.S. Army officer who was a Union general during the American Civil War, and who later became Chief of Engineers of the United States Army Corps of Engineers.

On March 20, 1918 Wilby was transferred to the Chaumont-Porcien on Headquarters of the American Expeditionary Force, where he was appointed as a Chief of Engineer Intelligence Division in the Office of Chief of Engineers.

In May 1941, the chief of engineers of the United States Army named the base the Midwest Air Depot, now called Tinker Air Force Base.
