In 1980, when flights opened up between Mainland China and the United States, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) realised that there was a problem - there had been no previous air catering agreements with American companies.

In January 1981, CAAC and Pan Am began flying between China and the United States.
In the early morning of September 13, Lin Biao, Ye Qun, Lin Liguo, and most of the other major plotters attempted to flee to the Soviet Union and boarded a prearranged Trident 1-E, (a CAAC B-256) piloted by Pan Jingyin, the deputy commander of the PLAAF 34th division.
