Arata studied and was intrigued by Classical Sculptures; this inspired a new theme which is based on the classic Roman and Greek gods.

For a number of years, he collected artwork for the Glyptothek in Munich, being instrumental in making the museum an important center for the study of classical sculpture.
He studied under Francis Chantrey and Edward Hodges Baily, and then, in 1836 went to Rome to pursue his study of classical sculpture, staying for two years.
