In canoes, they descended the mountains by the Clearwater River, the Snake River, and the Columbia River, past Celilo Falls and past what is now Portland, Oregon at the meeting of the Willamette and Columbia Rivers.
In the lower canyon of the South Fork of the Clearwater River, it is about four miles (6 km) upstream and south of Kooskia on State Highway 13.
Some of their guests were renowned, including H.R. MacMillan, president of the forest company MacMillan Bloedel; he visited twice a year with an entourage of business friends and owned property on the Clearwater River from 1949 to 1972.
Below the dam the river runs southeast for a little over a mile, crosses under Idaho State Route 7, and meets the Clearwater River at Ahsahka.
