In 1864, he bought the Zimmerman estate in Clifton Hill, Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, built the "Clifton Place" mansion, and went to live there.
He attended St Thomas' Christian Brothers College at Clifton Hill and became a boot trader in 1922.

It then crosses the Merri Creek, continuing along Queens Parade Clifton Hill, heading south west, turning south into Smith Street passing between Fitzroy and Collingwood.
The single track between Westgarth and Clifton Hill was duplicated in 2008-2009 and included a bridge over Merri Creek.
