In January 2005 Akpan introduced the second periodic report on Nigeria to the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child.

She is Professor of Law at the University of Oslo Faculty of Law, served as Acting Supreme Court Justice in the Supreme Court of Norway 2010–2011, and was in 2011 elected a member of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child as the nominee of the Government of Norway.
Although no office has yet been established, the social scientist Kamal Uddin Siddiqui, a former member of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, has since March 2004 promoted the establishment of an Independent Children's Commissioner for Bangladesh.
In May 2007, Asma Jahangir, Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief of the UN Human Rights Council, asked the Chinese authorities what measures they had taken to implement the recommendation of the Committee on the Rights of the Child, that the government should allow an independent expert to visit and confirm the well-being of Gedhun Choekyi Nyima while respecting his right to privacy, and that of his parents.
