As an athlete, she participated in 26 national championships in four sports and was a nine-time All-American at four different positions in softball, a sport in which she played on six national championship teams including the Connecticut Brakettes.
The former Husky also played during the summer season for the Connecticut Brakettes from 1999 to 2004 and set all-time team records for RBIs, home runs and doubles.
During the summer of 2007, Burkhart also competed in the Amateur Softball Association with other college players on the Stratford Brakettes.
