The DC-3s were reinforced by Convair 240s beginning in 1960; starting in 1965 the CV-240s were converted to Convair 600s as their piston engines were replaced with Rolls-Royce Dart turboprops.
On February 27, 1964, Fujita Airlines Flight 902 (a Convair 240, registration JA5098) overran the runway on landing at Oita Airport and crashed in the dried-up Urakawa River; killing 20 of 42 on board.
It was from this airport that the fatal flight of the Lynyrd Skynyrd Convair 240 departed on October 20, 1977.
