The Bill J. Priest Institute for Economic Development is a continuing education center, part of the Dallas County Community College District, which helps small businesses with training, development and other services.
He also was one of the primary founders and innovators of the Dallas Community College District Foundation's Rising Star Scholarship Program that sought to make college education available to children in Texas and served as the Chairman of The Chancellor’s Council for his state's universities.
Interstate 30 east of downtown (E R. L. Thornton Freeway) and Interstate 35E south of downtown (S R. L. Thornton Freeway) are named for him, as is the headquarters building of the Dallas County Community College District in downtown Dallas.

Hunt sits on the Board of Trustees of the Lyle School of Engineering at SMU, the Dallas County Community College District Foundation (where he is also Vice-Chair of the Steering Committee of the Bill J. Priest Institute for Economic Development), the Circle Ten Council of the Boy Scouts of America, the Bullock Texas State History Museum and the All Stars Project.
