His oldest son, Brian Steidle, former Captain in the US Marine Corps, served as a peace monitor in Darfur during the Darfur Conflict and wrote a book with his sister about his experiences, The Devil Came on Horseback, which was turned into a documentary film of the same name that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2007.

As the Darfur conflict erupted, GBA has focused its efforts on Sudan with a campaign called Sudan Challenge: a fund raising campaign which partners with several other organizations, most notably, the Bank of America Chicago Marathon and the Chevron Houston Marathon, in order to raise funds for and awareness about the economic and humanitarian crisis in Darfur and Southern Sudan.

As a result, she felt particularly attuned to situations of genocide, and in 2004, joined with Mark Hanis and Andrew Sniderman to form the Genocide Intervention Network to advocate for intervention in the Darfur conflict in Sudan.
