It was created in 1950 for David Rees-Williams, a Welsh Labour, and later, Liberal politician.
After studying mathematics at Cambridge University, earning the title of Senior Wrangler in 1953, he remained for his graduate studies at Cambridge, studying under the supervision of Shaun Wylie and David Rees.
Her father David Rees was also a distinguished mathematician, who worked on Enigma in Hut 6 at Bletchley Park.
Though many players have played for Northern who have later become international players and, including Jonathan Webb, Brian Keen, David Rees and Colin White for England, Scott Hastings and Jim Pollock for Scotland and Hennie le Roux for South Africa.
His parents, David Rees Jones and Hannah Jones (née Evans) and his sister Annie and brothers Rees and David Rees spoke only Welsh whereas Abel spoke Welsh and English (and later German) fluently.
