His father, George Alexander Syme (1821–1894), a brother of David Syme and Ebenezer Syme, was a graduate of the University of Aberdeen and became a Baptist clergyman in England.
It could be said that The Age lost prestige under his editorship, but circumstances in Australia were changing rapidly, it is unlikely that any newspaper will have the power wielded by The Age under David Syme and Arthur Windsor during the last quarter of the nineteenth century.
Its precursor Illustrated Australian News for Home Readers was first published in 1837 by Ebenezer Syme and David Syme.
