Central Decatur Community School District is located in the county seat of Decatur County, in the community of Leon, Iowa.
The county was created in November 1845 from the part of Perry County west of the Tennessee River in response to a petition by citizens on the west side of the river who lacked easy access to the county seat, which was located on the east side of the river.
John Lay Thompson (b. April 3, 1869, Grand River Township, Decatur County, Iowa - d. 1930) was an Iowa journalist and businessman who played a key role in the early history of the African American newspaper the Iowa Bystander.
In June 1835, Mary Palmer married Charles E. Dana, and moved with him first to New York City, and in 1837 to Bloomington, Iowa.
