5 unusual facts about Doce River


Amphiodia habilis

It is only known from a single locality off the coast of southeastern Brazil, near the mouth of the Doce River.

Black capuchin

The last subspecies, the crested or robust tufted capuchin (S. n. robustus) is found in the northern part of this species' range (north of the Doce River), and has a median conical crest on the crown.

Botocudo people

The second group were divided in to two bands residing at Guido Marliere, on the Rio Doce.

The tribe's original territory was in Espírito Santo, and reached inland to the headwaters of Rio Grande (Belmonte) and Rio Doce on the eastern slopes of the Serra do Espinhaço.

Yellow-legged Tinamou

noctivagus, the nominate race, occurs in southeastern Brazil: Minas Gerais (Doce River area), southern Bahia, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul.

It forms the divide between the upper watershed of the São Francisco River and those of the shorter rivers which flow east into the Atlantic, including the Doce, the Jequitinhonha, and the Pardo rivers.
