His son, the fourth Earl, served as Lord-Lieutenant of County Armagh and was also a Lord of the Bedchamber to the Prince of Wales and Vice-Chamberlain of the Household to Her Majesty Queen Alexandra.

He served as Solicitor General for Scotland, as a Senator of Justice (with the title Lord Glencairnie), as an Extraordinary Lord of Session and as Secretary of State for Scotland.

Gosford, California

Gosford was founded by the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1893 and named in honor of the Earl of Gosford, former landowner.
