Johns was recruited by Essendon from East Fremantle (WAFL) playing in the colts, State U18s & reserves, until a career threatening fractured labrum in his draft year (2002 rookie draft) which kept him from the playing field for over two years.
He then returned to Western Australia and switched to play for East Fremantle alongside his brother Scott, who played one game for Carlton in 1993.
One famous mark, which he took in the 1956 WANFL preliminary final over East Fremantle's Ray French is commemorated in a statue at Fremantle Oval by local sculptor Robert Hitchcock.
