Knatchbull-Hugessen was born in Ashford, Kent, England on 5 July 1891, the son of Edward Hugessen Knatchbull-Hugessen, 1st Baron Brabourne and Ethel Mary Walker, daughter of Sir George Gustavus Walker.
Michael Herbert Rudolf Knatchbull, 5th Baron Brabourne, GCSI, GCIE, MC (8 May 1895 – 23 February 1939) was a British peer and soldier, the son of the 4th Baron Brabourne.
In 1955 he married Mary Cecilia Knatchbull-Hugessen, daughter of the Canadian senator Adrian Knatchbull-Hugessen.
