Simon Montacute

He had two elder brothers, John, who died in August 1317, and William Montagu, 1st Earl of Salisbury, and a younger brother, Edward Montagu, 1st Baron Montagu, who married Alice of Norfolk, daughter of Thomas of Brotherton and granddaughter of Edward I.


Edward Montagu, 1st Baron Montagu of Boughton

He was one of the key founders of what is known today as Guy Fawkes Night through his sponsorship, in Parliament, of the Observance of 5th November Act 1605.

Edward Montagu, 2nd Baron Montagu of Boughton

He took the engagement to the Commonwealth in October 1644, and was constantly in the House of Lords during the proceedings against Archbishop William Laud.

After the Restoration he resided chiefly at Boughton, died on 10 January 1684, and was buried at Weekley.

Francis Barrington

Barrington was the eldest son of Sir Thomas Barrington of Barrington Hall, Hatfield Broadoak, Essex (died 1586) and as her second husband Winifred Pole (b. aft. 1521 or in 1525), youngest daughter of the 1st Baron Montagu.

Henry Cuttance, born in Melcombe Regis, Dorset, was son of Sir Roger Cuttance, Edward Montagu’s flag captain in the Naseby, in 1660.

HMS Sandwich

Six ships of the Royal Navy have borne the name HMS Sandwich, either after the English seaside town of Sandwich, or one of the holders of the title Earl of Sandwich, particularly Vice-Admiral Edward Montagu, 1st Earl of Sandwich, or First Lord of the Admiralty John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich.

Samuel Pepys records that a party of children sang to Edward Montagu, 1st Earl of Sandwich when he was appointed as Master of the Royal Wardrobe during the Restoration but he was unmoved, the orphans were evicted, and the Wardrobe resumed its usual function.
