His academic studies, preparatory to entering college, were prosecuted principally in the Male Academy, at Lincolnton, N.C., and his collegiate course was taken in Emory and Henry College, Virginia, from which he was graduated with the degree of A. B., and which afterward conferred up on him the degree of A.M., not merely "in course," but because of his higher attainments in literature.
Greiner co-wrote The Nature and Functions of Law with Harold J. Berman (1918-2007) of Harvard University and Samir N. Salima of Emory and Henry College.
In 2010 House was selected as the focus of the Silas House Literary Festival at Emory and Henry College in Emory, Virginia.
Walter graduated from Emory and Henry College in 1875, and later received theology and medical degrees from Vanderbilt University.
