Alex made his debut for the club, where he made his first start and played 90 minutes, in a 1–1 draw against Zenit Saint Petersburg on the opening game of the season and two weeks after the opening game of the season, Alex scored his first goal in a 2–0 win over Spartak Nalchik when he scored in a free-kick.
Additionally, he also started and scored in the UEFA Europa League 4–3 home triumph over FC Zenit Saint Petersburg (eventually 5–4 aggregate win).
Since 2005 he is the director general (later president) of the football club Zenit, Saint Petersburg.

His brother Sergey Fursenko (b. 1954) is a technician, businessman, TV producer and the president of the football club Zenit (St. Petersburg).
After two years with FC Zenit Saint Petersburg and one at FC Krylia Sovetov Samara, Kulkov returned to Portugal, joining F.C. Alverca – Benfica's feeder club but also in the top flight; he closed out his career with amateurs FC Shatura, aged 35.
